Comments: "A complete encyclopedia of all Athletic, Scientific, Recreative, Outdoor and Indoor Exercises and Diversions, including The Boy's Own Book, The Book of Gymnastics, and Parlor Magic". The preface states, "The American publishers have omitted a few articles, entirely useless on this side the Atlantic, as the extra expense would have debarred the more useful part from being in the hands of hundreds of Youths, who will find everything that will amuse them in our present volume."
Note: There seem to be three primary editions of the Boy's Own Book:
a. The Boy's Own Book from 1829 (circa)
b. The Boy's Own Book Extended, 1855, the edition listed here, which combines the original Boy's Own Book with Parlor Magic and Preston's Book of Gymnastics.
c. The Boy's Own Book New Edition, 1880. A greatly expanded edition of the first edition
Finally, not to be confused with G.A. Hutchinson's Boy's Own Book, which has completely different contents.
